Set in 1860s Japan and the fictionalised version of Kyoto named Kyo, the game follows a samurai that looks an awful lot like Kazuma Kiryu at a pivotal point of Japanese history, as Western influence comes to the insulated society. However, this samurai is called Sakamoto Ryoma who has no affiliation to Kiryu. Other characters, like Goro Majima, have also been recast as different characters for Like A Dragon: Ishin.
